Monticello & Walton's Mountain
October 15 - 17, 2009
Our three day travel adventure will take us to the beautiful mountains of Virginia to see the autumn colors. Our first stop will be at Luray
Caverns where we will journey through the huge chambers to explore cathedral-sized rooms with soaring ceilings, towering columns and breathtaking stalactites, and then gaze into mirror-perfect pools. The
caverns hold the world's only “Stalacpipe” Organ that plays its hauntingly beautiful music on natural formations.
The next two nights will be spent in Charlottesville. Our second day we will visit Monticello to get a look at the extraordinary house Thomas Jefferson built and furnished for himself and his family. Our lunch will be at the historic Michie Tavern where we will also have a tour of this 1784 establishment.
Then off to explore Ash Lawn-Highland, home of James Monroe. After our tour we will have free time to discover the historic Court Square in
Charlottesville. Our departure day will be filled with more history and beauty. We will first tour the University of Virginia Rotunda and Grounds. Thomas Jefferson modeled the Rotunda after the Pantheon in Rome, reducing the measurements so that the Rotunda would not dwarf the Pavilions. Construction began in 1822 and was completed in 1826. Our last visit for the day will be Walton’s Mountain! See the displays of John-Boy’s bedroom, Ike Godsey’s Store, “The Walton’s” kitchen and living room, a good way to end this wonderful autumn tour!
